Types and Varieties of Mussels
Zephyros IKE Mussel Farms - Exports & Collaborations - Pieria

Mussels are one of the most exquisite fruits of the sea. They belong to the bivalve mollusc family and are found in both fresh and saltwater, in various lengths and shapes depending on the environment in which they grow.

Zephyros Mussel Farming IKE, taking advantage of the ideal conditions of the Thermaikos Gulf, produces high-quality mussels, with exceptional characteristics that make them sought after in the Greek and European markets.

Main varieties of mussels

The main variety cultivated in Pieria is Mytilus galloprovincialis – the well-known Mediterranean mussel. It is a species that thrives in calm, clear and plankton-rich waters, such as those of the Thermaikos Gulf.

These mussels stand out for:

  • The oval and elongated shape of their shell.
  • The deep black to dark blue color on the outside and the blue highlights on the inside.
  • The intense orange or white color of the flesh, depending on the sex (orange = female, white = male).
  • Their full, fleshy texture and sweet, marine flavor.

Wild and farmed mussels

Although in some areas of Greece “wild mussels” are still collected, farmed mussels are now considered to be of superior quality. This is because they are grown under systematic control, in areas with controlled water purity, nutritional richness and protection from external pollutants.

The floating cultivation method (long-line) ensures ideal growing conditions, resulting in mussels that are larger, more fleshy and of uniform shape, without impurities or spoilage.

From nature to plate

Our mussels undergo strict quality controls before being released to the market. With their natural flavor, nutritional value and freshness that characterizes them, they are one of the most valuable treasures of the Greek sea.

At Zephyros IKE, each mussel reflects the wealth of Pieria, the purity of the Thermaikos Gulf and the passion of the people who continue a decades-old tradition.
