Mussel farming in Pieria
Zephyros IKE Mussel Farms - Exports & Collaborations - Pieria
Pieria is one of the most important centers of mussel farming in Greece and Europe. Since the late 1980s, the Makrygialos region of Pieria has developed into a dynamic production center, thanks to the ideal natural conditions of the Thermaikos Gulf and the know-how of people who have dedicated their lives to the sea.
In 1987, the systematic cultivation of “floating mussels” began in Pieria, with the implementation of the long-line system, which is based on floating installations in the sea. The success of the project led the Prefecture of Pieria and the state services to establish a legal marine mussel farming park, covering an area of approximately 1,685 acres, the largest in the country.
A blessed place
The waters of the Thermaic Gulf receive the flow of four major rivers — Aliakmonas, Loudias, Axios and Gallikos — which carry valuable nutrients, creating a marine environment extremely rich in plankton. This unique natural composition gives Pierian mussels their unparalleled taste, flesh and nutritional value.
